Butch Goring was trepidatious last fall as he began his first season as the Islanders’ lead TV analyst on MSG Plus. How does he feel entering Year Two?
“A lot better,’’ he said. “There is not the anxiety going in like, 'what is this all about?' The hockey part was easy. It was being able to get your points across and learn all the tricks of the trade.’’
Goring credited the production team and his partner, Howie Rose, for easing the transition.
“There were many times he covered up for whatever I wasn’t doing properly,’’ Goring said.
The best part of leaving the studio for the arena was being around the game and players, most of whom were familiar enough with Goring’s resume to appreciate he knew what he was talking about.
“I would ask them questions about hockey and in most instances I knew the answer, and they’d look at me at times and say, ‘You’re a pro, you know,’’’ he said. “But as I explained to them, fans don’t want to know what I think. They want to know what you think.’’
