Former Newsday paper boy and YES president Tracy Dolgin (Cornell Class of ’81) created a stir in the local sports media world with some candid comments in Tuesday’s Newsday.
Notably, he called YES a “homer network’’ and said its announcers root for the Yankees.
There was even more I did not use in my original article, such as: “We are not impartial, so it is very different from doing national sports. Everything we have is from the home team standpoint, so the guys in the booth are fans.’’
Dolgin was just trying to be honest, and no one could have quibbled if he simply had stated the obvious, which is that all regional sports networks want the teams they cover to win because it’s good for business.
But by using loaded words such as “homer’’ and “fans’’ he put his on-air talent in an awkward position because his comments can and will be used against them by critics, this season and beyond.
