How about that! Mel Allen highlights on CD

A testament to the Yankees’ dominance in the Fall Classic, the top seven players in total World Series games played were all Bronx Bombers: Yogi Berra (pictured) (75), Mickey Mantle (65), Elston Howard (54), Gil McDougald and Hank Bauer (53), Phil Rizzuto (52) and Joe DiMaggio (51).

Stocking stuffer alert: Pat Hughes, radio voice of the Cubs, has released the latest in his series of CDs that chronicle the careers of famous baseball play-by-play men, in this case the Yankees’ Mel Allen.

There is plenty of cool audio here for fans of a certain age to enjoy, including Allen calling the 1938 World Series before he ever had worked a regular-season major league game.

Another historical gem is a mistake of Sterling-ian proportions in calling Yogi Berra’s home run in Game 7 of the 1960 Series, which Allen initially called foul because rightfielder Roberto Clemente did not react to the ball.

The CD sells for $14.95 at BaseballVoices.com.
