Islanders reporter settles in

Peter Ruttgaizer debuted as MSG Plus’ Islanders reporter last Saturday barely 24 hours after arriving in the United States and taking a quick tour of Nassau Coliseum, his new office.

Other basics, such as a home, car and cell phone, would have to wait. It took a few days, but by Friday he was settled into a place in Point Lookout and had a phone. “I still need to get a vehicle,’’ he said.

Ruttgaizer has made work-related moves before, but “nothing this hectic.’’

Not that he is complaining. MSG turned to the Toronto native on relatively short notice after its 2010-11 Islanders reporters, Deb Placey and Rob Carlin, switched to the Devils and Capitals, respectively.

Ruttgaizer, 45, is old enough to recall the Islanders’ glory days and Canadian enough to appreciate that by American standards, at least, the New York area appreciates its hockey.

“It was very difficult to engage anyone in a meaningful hockey conversation in Denver,’’ he said of his three years covering the Avalanche.

“Here in the space of a week I’ve had maybe a dozen conversations with people talking about hockey. It is Toronto or anywhere else in Canada? No, it isn’t. But it’s more than what I experienced in Denver.’’
