Joe Garagiola turns off his microphone

Before John Madden revolutionized NFL analysis with his folksy, accessible style, Joe Garagiola played a similar role for baseball over a six-decade career that ended Wednesday when he retired after 15 years on select Diamondbacks games.

Garagiola, 87, called Cardinals and Yankees games on local TV but was most associated with NBC. He also served as a ghostwriter of sorts for his childhood friend Yogi Berra, often putting memorable words into Berra’s mouth.

As Garagiola said Wednesday, “Yogi’s moved into one of these assisted living and retirement communities. I said, ‘How’s it going?’ and he says, ‘It’s all right, but geez, they’ve got a lot of old people here.’”
