John Sterling, the Yankees' iconic radio voice, will be returning to the booth on Dec. 16 when the Nets take on the Hawks. Sterling will be the play-by-play man on the YES Network telecast with a scheduled 3 p.m. tip.
This isn't Sterling's first go-round with basketball — it's more of a homecoming than a rookie debut. He was the Nets' play-by-play man from 1975-80 when they called Nassau Coliseum home. Sterling also called the Washington Bullets' games from 1980-81, then the Atlanta Hawks from 1981-89.
"I couldn't be more excited," Sterling said in a statement. "I loved basketball all my life. I broadcast so many years in the ABA and NBA. It's like coming home again. I'm thrilled."
In addition to his basketball experience, Sterling also did play-by-play for the Atlanta Braves and Islanders before he began entertaining Yankees fans with his unique home run calls.
