Few would have expected when he joined ESPN’s “Monday Night Football’’ that in 2013 Jon Gruden still would be at it, entering his fifth season. (Or that Bill Cowher would be entering his seventh season in CBS’ studio, but that’s another story.)
Why the appeal of sticking with television over coaching, beyond the obvious plus of going undefeated every season?
“Well, first of all, you're very close to the game,’’ Gruden said. “It's not like you put football away. You have access to things you've never seen before, seeing teams practice, seeing their facilities. You still get to study the tape. You see the game from a different angle. So that helps.
"You don't miss the game like some people think because you're so very close to it. And I'll be honest with you, this is a fun profession.’’
