I've said it before, I'll say it again: The best testament to Mariano Rivera's greatness is that no one holds it against him that he blew a save in the worst possible circumstance: Game 7 of the World Series.
Anyway, congratulations to Mo. Steiner Sports celebrated the big moment in a classy way - by peddling signed, logoed Rivera baseballs for $199 a pop in the very first YES commercial after save No. 602.
Here is how YES' Michael Kay called the big moment:
"Strike three! Ballgame over! Yankees win, and it's perfect, because the greatest closer in history now has the most saves in history. With 602 he moves ahead of Trevor Hoffman and he stands alone atop the closer mountain."
Here is how WCBS' John Sterling called it:
"Strike three! He's got it! He's done it! Mariano, the greatest relief pitcher in the history of baseball is being hugged at the mound by Russell Martin and the entire Yankee ballclub. That's 602 career saves. Mariano has now saved more games than anyone else in the history of baseball.
"What an accomplishment. Every year has been a brilliant year. The best relief pitcher in the history of baseball now has the record for most saves in the history of baseball. So Mariano has saved his 602nd game.
"Ballgame over. Yankees win. Thuuuuuuh Yankees win!"
