Bridging the audiences for theater and sports is notoriously difficult, and many skeptics did not think a Broadway show about Vince Lombardi that kicked off in October would last beyond football season.
But “Lombardi’’ did just that, surviving longer than most theater experts expected before the producers announced Tuesday the final show will be May 22. (It had been selling tickets through June 19.)
By then it will have had 30 previews and 244 regular performances and attracted positive reviews for former Lindenhurst High football player Dan Lauria as Lombardi and Tony-nominated Judith Light as his wife.
Producers Tony Ponturo and Fran Kirmser hope to further the cause of sports-themed theater with their next project: “Magic/Bird,’’ based on the lives of, well, the sports fans among you can figure it out.
