Mike Francesa opened his WFAN radio program Monday with a familiar lament: Fox Sports 1 and 2 again would be preempting his show's TV simulcast, this time both Monday and Tuesday.
"Don't ask me why," he said. "I have no idea. But I'm not going to worry about that."
The reason, as it often is, was Fox's live soccer commitments, on this occasion UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches.
Among the Fox Sports 1 games supplanting Francesa were Russia vs. Liechtenstein on Monday and Kazakhstan vs. Latvia Tuesday. Among the Fox Sports 2 games were Ukraine vs. Slovakia on Monday and Andorra vs. Wales on Tuesday.
So while fans of Francesa will not get to see his simulcast early this busy sports week, they at least will get a valuable geography lesson.
In a related development, it turns out Craig Carton, WFAN's morning co-host, knows his Euro 2016 schedule well.
Monday morning, Carton and his partner, Boomer Esiason, fired a few shots back at Francesa after Francesa had been dismissive Sunday morning of a contest to meet the station's morning team.
Said Carton: "Are we being preempted tomorrow for Kazakhstan soccer?"
