Here is a column I wrote about the city of my birth, Newark, as it prepares to host its first NCAA Tournament games ever Friday night.
In it I quote a brief conversation I had with Cory Booker, the city's mayor and a Twitter star with more than one million followers.
One element of the Newark regional for which I did not have room in the story:
Even though city and arena officials are thrilled to have big names such as Ohio State, North Carolina and Kentucky in town, it was a severe blow when Syracuse bowed out in the round of 32.
The many SU alums in the area would have brought more bodies into town, especially for Thursday's open practices.
And because they are local, they are more likely to have returned to Newark for future events than visitors from, say, Lexington.
