Chris Weidman almost had fight of the night

Here's a little nugget that didn't quite make it into my Sunday newspaper column on Chris Weidman winning in UFC debut.

Turns out he nearly picked up one of those nifty and lucrative fight bonuses. Weidman said that everyone back in the locker room was telling him that his fight -- a unanimous decision over Alessio Sakara -- was going to win Fight of the Night. That would have netted Weidman a sweet $60,000 bonus in addition to his show money and win money. (Fighters get paid to fight, and winners receive additional compensation.)

More than enough money for the four-time All-American wrestler to move his wife and 1-year-old daughter out of his parents' basement.

Enter Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann. Those two welterweights put on quite the show in the main event last Thursday in Louisville. A bloody, wild stand-up show that kept everyone buzzing the next day (partially because of the controversial unanimous decision victory for Sanchez).

"I’m watching that fight and the first round, I’m like please someone just finish someone, man," Weidman said. "Then all of a sudden, I hear Joe Rogan say ‘This is a great fight,’ and I’m like ‘Nooooooooooo!’”
