Remember when Nate Marquardt and Demian Maia fought at UFC 102, with the presumption that the winner would fight Anderson Silva for his middleweight title?
Quick recap since then: Marquardt knocked out Maia in 21 seconds, Silva had elbow surgery, Vitor Belfort is signed to fight Silva at UFC 112, Marquardt loses to Chael Sonnen at UFC 109, Maia wins a decision over Dan Miller and Belfort underwent surgery on his left shoulder.
There, got it?
Now, Maia slides into Belfort's spot like he was Maverick going to Top Gun. Crazy stuff, huh?
Maia (12-1) is Mr. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but forced Miller to fight stand-up most of their bout. Not sure if Maia showed enough to make us think he can stand with Silva, the best fighter in MMA history. Then again, who at middleweight (or even light heavyweight) can hang with Silva?
Should be interesting come April 10 in Abu Dhabi.
