Here's a little bit of shrewd marketing between business partners.
EA Sports is releasing its first MMA video game later this year. Strikeforce is the featured league of fighters in the game.
And today brings word that EA Sports will be live-streaming the Jay Hieron-Joe Riggs welterweight bout at Strikeforce Miami on Saturday, Jan. 30 for free.
Hieron, a Long Island native on a six-bout win streak, fights Riggs around 9 p.m., so log on to EASportsMMA.com and watch it.
It's not exactly the same as airing prelims on Spike the way UFC does, but the concept is the same. Give fans a free fight before the main card starts and try to hook them into making the purchase. Of course, there's no way viewers could get Showtime hooked up on their cable sets in time to watch the 10 p.m. card.
But at least we can see the Hieron fight, given he's a proven fighter that got bumped to the undercard by bigger names with smaller resumes.
