LAS VEGAS — One left hook left no doubt as to the winner of the main event — and even less doubt about the next featherweight title contender.
Frankie Edgar connected on a perfectly placed left hook to the face of Chad Mendes. Mendes collapsed immediately and the UFC featherweight title eliminator fight ended midway through the first round Friday night.
“C’mon, you gotta give it to me,” Edgar said about the title shot after winning at “The Ultimate Fighter” finale at The Cosmopolitan.
UFC president Dana White after the fight granted Edgar's wish.
"Nobody can deny Frankie anymore," White said. "He looked amazing tonight and he'll get whatever he wants."
On Saturday at UFC 194, featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his title against interim champion Conor McGregor in what has been billed as the biggest fight of the year.
"I think our division is the most talked about division in the UFC right now," Edgar said. "And I attribute that to Conor and the way he talks about himself and talks bad about everybody else."
White was surprised, as were many others, that Edgar knocked out Mendes so quickly and so easily. Mendes was considered the more aggressive and powerful fighter heading into the fight.
"Sometimes you gotta go out and put the stamp on it," White said. "He put the stamp on it tonight."
