Jake Shields officially confirmed what was the biggest open secret in MMA since April.
The former Strikeforce middleweight champion tweeted Monday that he signed a contract to fight for the UFC.
Shields, No. 7 in our midyear pound-for-pound MMA rankings, said he will compete at welterweight and fight Martin Kampmann in a few months in California.
That will be a nice first test in the UFC for Shields, who manhandled Dan Henderson in his Strikeforce debut in April before Strikeforce let Shields' contract expire. Kampmann dominated Paulo Thiago at UFC 115.
With Shields fighting at 170, the division just got more interesting. Assuming Shields beats Kampmann, how many more fights until he gets a title shot at current champion Georges St-Pierre?
If GSP beats Josh Koscheck later this year, then perhaps Shields vs. Jon Fitch for a shot at the champ?
