Folks speak of the "UFC jitters" when it comes to fighters making their promotional debuts inside the Octagon.
For Lindenhurst native Ryan LaFlare, that may not be the case.
Yes, this Saturday, the undefeated welterweight fights in Sweden on the prelims for UFC on Fuel TV 9. But for a 29-year-old whose previous seven fights were in the regional promotion Ring of Combat, the major leagues of MMA could actually be a relief.
Ther are no ticket sales to worry about, no throngs of friends and family making the trip to Atlantic City, no phone calls and texts an hour before his fight from people looking for their tickets. (In many smaller MMA promotions, fighters sell tickets to the show and get a percentage of those sales as their paycheck for the fight.)
“I think that’s more stressful than going to a country where no one knows who you are and you’re on the undercard," LaFlare said. "You go out there and fight. I think it’s almost a relief that I have nothing to worry about. All I have to worry about is fighting.”
