Matt Serra and his 'Martial arts Disneyland'

Fightin' Words got a little sneak peek at the new Serra BJJ academy in Huntington on Wednesday night. Classes are going on now, but the official grand opening is May 22, 2010. Anyone and everyone are invited to check out the new spot. Free armbars for the first 100 people through the door. Just kidding, but with Serra, you never know.

Matt Serra will be there, as will Renzo Gracie and Ricardo Almeida. You might even get a chance to take photos with the new UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, too.

"This is a martial arts Disneyland, and you can quote me on that," Serra said.

"I will," I said.

Well, it appears I just did.

The new Serra BJJ, located about 100 feet away from his previous school at 601 W. Jericho Turnpike, is huge. Roughly 8,300 square feet for those of you who understand that sort of space size. That's about five times as large as the old place.

Serra BJJ has enough mat space to teach three classes at once, plus a full-sized MMA cage, weight and cardio machines, and locker rooms with showers that look like a top-tier Las Vegas hotel bathroom.

"Thank Frank Trigg for that," Serra said.
