In his last fight, Jake Shields was the other guy. And he was the champion! But he was defending his welterweight title against Strikeforce's heralded newcomer Dan Henderson, formerly of UFC, Pride and U.S. Olympic fame.
This time around, Jake Shields is the highly promoted fighter. And he's going up against Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 on Saturday. Kampmann has put together a nice little run of late and looks better than we've seen in a while.
UFC president Dana White threw a little more pressure on Shields' shoulders when he said that a win over Kampmann and he'd likely get a title shot against the Georges St-Pierre-Josh Koscheck winner at UFC 124 in December.
"I'm very excited to be fighting in the UFC," Shields said. "I've wanted to fight here for 11 years. and to finally make it is something I thought . . . You know, when I first started, I figured I'd be there in a year. So it took a little longer than I thought."
