On Chael Sonnen, Uriah Hall and Anderson Silva

UFC light heavyweights Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen

UFC light heavyweights Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen talk about their experience coaching on the latest version of 'The Ultimate Fighter' show. Videojournalists: Mario Gonzalez and Mark LaMonica (Jan. 23, 2013)

Chael Sonnen talks how he needs to talk when it’s time to talk.

Meaning, if it’s time to hype a fight, he’ll go to town with the commentary, wit and hyperbole needed to sell tickets and pay-per-view. If it’s time to chill, he can be chill.

And if it’s time to build up a fighter’s confidence, Sonnen can do that as well.

Here’s what Sonnen said to Uriah Hall as he prepared to fight Dylan Andrews in the final taped episode of Season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter” to earn a spot in this Saturday’s Ultimate Finale:

“I was in the top 10 of this weight class for five years. I’ve fought these guys, I’ve studied these guys. Coach and I know everybody in this weight. You can beat them all. All. No exceptions,” Sonnen said as he pointed to the Anderson Silva banner hanging in the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas. “I’m not saying that puke’s name, but you can beat them all. Right now.”

Silva, of course, is the UFC middleweight champion, undefeated in UFC history and considered the greatest MMA fighter in the sport’s history.

It was a solid moment of television, a strong speech from Sonnen and a terrific motivator for Hall, a 28-year-old fighter from Queens.

Here’s what Hall told Newsday when asked to describe that moment:

“If I ever get a chance in the future to ever fight Anderson Silva, that would be amazing. Dude has done so much and e’s a walking legend. Even if I get my — — kicked by that guy, that would be great. I think anybody who gets their — — kicked by that guy, that’s an awesome attempt to even fail.”

Silva’s next fight is at UFC 162 on July 6 against undefeated Long Island native Chris Weidman. One of those wins for Weidman came against Hall in Ring of Combat in New Jersey.
