Ring of Combat notes and quotes

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Aside from the championship performances from Levittown's Gian Villante and Lindenhurst's Ryan LaFlare, it was a rough Friday night for Long Island fighters at Ring of Combat XXVIII at the Tropicana.

- Melville's Ryan Castillo, a 135-pounder trained by Matt Serra and Ray Longo, lost by second-round submission to Michael Murray, a Tiger Schulmann fighter. Castillo gave up his back twice in the second round, and tried to work an ankle lock in between. Murray locked in a left arm bar that forced Castillo to tap.

- Ridge's Lennox Chance, an instructor at Varner Combat Academy in Centereach, lost in the first round by submission via rear naked choke to 135-pounder Nick Pace (Tiger Schulmann).

- At lightweight, Bethpage's Nabih Barakat, another Team Serra-Longo fighter, was knocked out in the first round by Edson Barboza from Jupiter, Fla. Barboza, who has some of the fastest leg kicks you'll ever see, dropped Barakat with a monster right hand, then landed a few more while on the ground. Barakat was knocked out, and the medics ran in with a board just in case. Barakat was able to walk out under his own power while wearing an oxygen mask. Remember Barboza's name, you're going to hear it again one day.

Ring of Combat has sent 32 fighters to the UFC, which is what a strong regional promotion is supposed to do. Props to Lou Neglia for making that happen. "The goal is to find undiscovered talent, not undeveloped talent," Neglia said.

Several of those fighters were on hand at the Tropicana on Friday night, as were quite a few other pro fighters. Here's the list: Matt Serra, Frankie Edgar, Ricardo Almeida, Jim Miller, Renzo Gracie, Donald Cerrone, Leonard Garcia, Cub Swanson, Miguel Angel Torres, Pete Sell, Dante Rivera and Kurt Pellegrino.
