Perhaps Paulo Thiago is for real.
Early through the second round at UFC 109, Thiago ate a big punch from Mike Swick then landed a huge counter left hook that dropped Swick. Thiago then moved in on the stunned and fallen Swick, locked in a D'Arce choke and got the submission victory 1:54 into the welterweight bout at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
It was an impressive completion to what was one of the more active fights so far at UFC 109.
This is the second straight loss for Swick (14-4), who lost to Dan Hardy in a No. 1 contender's bout last year. Swick took the bout several weeks ago after his AKA teammate Josh Koscheck, another victim of Thiago, was injured during training.
Thiago (13-1 could very possibly get a shot at Georges St-Pierre's welterweight title fairly shortly, assuming GSP gets by Dan Hardy at UFC 111 in March. Or maybe we'll get a Jon Fitch rematch first. A Hardy-Thiago matchup would also be rather interesting to see, regardless of the outcome of his GSP bout.
