Dagnabbit, UFC marketing department, you're too good! Back in December when the Randy Couture-Mark Coleman main event for UFC 109 was announced, I fell asleep with two paragraphs left in the press release.
But then you racheted up the hype machine and suckered me into this pay-per-view. This one was more a clunker than Toyota.
No disrespect to the careers of Couture and Coleman - they're both legends and UFC Hall of Famers -- but this light heavyweight fight was sad to watch. Couture landed about 100 percent of his punches. Coleman offered very little defense and even less offense.
Couture (18-10) teed off at will, and in the second round, he locked in a rear naked choke to get the submission victory at the 1:09 mark.
The best offense Coleman (16-10) mounted came during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. Coleman said he'd back and that he wouldn't quit, then turned around to see who was yelling something derogatory at him. It was Tito Ortiz (of course!). Coleman then cursed out Ortiz with one bad word, then challenged him to a fight with another bad word. It was Coleman's best 1-2 combo of the night.
Please don't make that match, UFC. Seriously. Just let Coleman shut it down and end his career somewhat gracefully.
As for Couture, who is 2-1 in the past seven months, he still looks to be in great shape. A title shot seems out of the question anytime soon, but maybe a shot against the Tito Ortiz-Chuck Liddell winner could be somewhat interesting.
