NEWARK - How do you wake up an antsy Jersey crowd after the Jon Fitch snoozer at UFC 111? Throw a Jersey boy into the Octagon and hope he goes crazy.
Enter Kurt "Batman" Pellegrino of Point Pleasant, N.J., with his bleach blond hair and wild array of tattoos.
Pellegrino and Fabricio Camoes displayed excellent jiu-jitsu and wrestling skills in the first round, exchanging rear naked and guillotine choke attempts. Pellegrino, fighting off a hanging rear naked choke by Camoes, actually fell to the ground, landed on his head and somehow managed to reverse position all in the same fluid motion.
The second round was a little slower, but Pellegrino (21-4) controlled the bout and got back control of Camoes with about one minute left. He quickly locked in the rear naked choke and Camoes (10-5-1) was forced to tap out with 40 seconds left.
"Ha ha ha haaaaaa!" Pellegrino said about winning in his home state as he addressed the crowd at the Prudential Center.
