How these two monsters -- Ben Rothwell and Gilbert Yvel -- were able to last 15 minutes inside the octagon at UFC 115 in Vancouver is beyond comprehension.
But the two UFC heavyweights slugged it out, and by way of continued ground control throughout the bout, Rothwell won the unanimous decision. The judges scored it 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.
Yvel flashed impressive athleticism for a heavyweight later in the first round. Rothwell pulled a Roy Nelson and worked Yvel with a crucifix, but Yvel threw his legs over his head and rolled out of the crucifix. The reversal of position led to a strong flurry of punches by Yvel.
In the second round, Rothwell continued his sit and squish approach on Yvel. Rothwell got a few takedowns and was active with his hands on the ground. But Yvel was able to roll through it at one point and unleashed a flurry of powerful shots that Rothwell ate with his face.
Rothwell sat on Yvel for most of the third round, as both fighters seemed gassed. Still, Rothwell appeared more active from the mount.
