PHILADELPHIA -- Chad Mendes has the potential to be a champion one day.

Maybe that day is a little further away than the featherweight fighter from Team Alpha Male (Urijah Faber's squad) would like, but he took the right steps Saturday night.

The undefeated Mendes dominated Yahya with takedowns and assorted striking and then outlasted him in the third round to win the UFC 133 bout at the Wells Fargo Center by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout, 30-27, in favor of Mendes (11-0).

“Chad is strong and Chad is good," Yahya said. "He is really good at what he does. He kicked me a few times and I felt them for sure, and he has great take downs.”

Mendes scored some good shots and looked more active in the final minute of the first round. He had some violent-sounding takedowns in both the second and third rounds and pretty much outclassed Yahya (16-7) at every position.

"Of course we all look for a finish, but overall I am happy with the fight and I felt good," Mendes said. "When I took him down the first time I wanted to see what he felt like. Hes a tough guy and I knew he would be strong. I was trying to elbow him and follow through with some quick pop-shots as much as possible.”
