SAN JOSE, Calif. -- One left hand can wake up several thousand people real quick. And how Rafael Dos Anjos managed to still be standing after about a minute of eating bombs from Gleison Tibau was remarkable.
His right ear bloodied from the barrage, and with a cut under his left eye, Dos Anjos made it into the third round of the lightweight bout at UFC 139 on Saturday night inside the HP Pavilion.
But surviving doesn't necessarily mean winning, not in mixed martial arts. With that onslaught of bombs in the second round and a few takedowns here and there, Tibau (34-7) won by split decision. Two judges scored the bout in favor of Tibau, 29-28, and 30-27. The third judge gave it to Dos Anjos (15-6), 29-28.
Tibau won his third straight fight for the first time in four years.
