The Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia bout at UFC 156 was billed as submission defense specialist vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission specialist.
What we got Saturday night in Las Vegas was . . . exactly that.
Maia took down Fitch with ease in each round, controlling his body with back mounts, body triangles and submission attempts. At times, Maia looked like a human backpack.
All three judges scored the bout 30-27 in favor of Maia, who completely dominated Fitch. Through the first two rounds, Maia had body control for more than nine of the 10 minutes.
Maia (18-4) is now 3-0 since dropping to welterweight after a January 2012 loss at middleweight to Chris Weidman.
Fitch (27-5-1) is now 1-2-1 in his last four fights over the past two years.
