The UFC’s bad luck in 2017 won’t go away.
Flyweight title challenger Ray Borg was deemed by the UFC medical team as unfit to compete in his scheduled main event against champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 215 on Saturday in Edmonton, the promotion announced early Friday morning.
According to the UFC, Borg is suffering from a viral illness that has left him unable to compete. Borg’s nutritionist told MMAFighting.com that Borg has been getting sicker each day during fight week and that “it wasn’t weight related.”
UFC 215 now will be headlined by a bantamweight title bout between champion Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko, while a flyweight bout between Henry Cejudo and Wilson Reis has been moved to the pay-per-view.
The main event was supposed to be a milestone for Johnson. The longtime flyweight champion aimed to defend his title for a record 11th consecutive time. He currently is tied with Anderson Silva for most consecutive title defenses with 10. The UFC has not rescheduled the bout as of now.
