It seems having a former welterweight champion, back-to-back finalists on "The Ultimate Fighter" and a top middleweight contender just isn't enough UFC for Long Island.
Add in being the first East Coast area to house a UFC Gym, as the promotion announced Monday night that it will open a facility in New Hyde Park in the spring of 2013.
It will be located right near the intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Leonard Boulevard and will be open 24 hours.
“What makes our gyms so special is that we bring fitness and community together - when Dad is doing a boxing class, Mom can be taking High Octane Condition, all while the kids are improving their athletic performance,” said Adam Sedlack, senior vice president, UFC Gym, in a statement. “We have something for everyone, and cannot wait to show our ’Train Different’ approach to the residents of Long Island."
You can expect the normal accoutrements of a new gym -- cardio machines, strength and conditioning machines, free weights, etc. -- along with a few things that make the MMA-based gym stand out from the others. Those include a 32-foot octagon, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio, bag room, battling ropes, agility ladders and of course, the Arm Bar Cafe.
Also expect classes such as hot hula, women's self defense, spin and youth MMA.
Early membership enrollment begins Dec. 1. Rates have yet to be published for the New Hyde Park location, but at the Honolulu location, rates range from $35-130 per month depending on the level of engagement.
