Mixed martial arts may not yet be legal in New York, but WEC 46 has a little Long Island flavor.

The Jan. 10 event in Sacramento, Calif., -- airing live on Versus at 9 p.m. EDT -- features lightweight champion Jamie Varner (from Tempe, Ariz.) against interim champ Ben Henderson (Glendale, Ariz.) in a title unification bout.

So where's the local connection?

Well, Varner just recently opened up Varner's Combat Academy in Centereach, and he expects to be there teaching in the weeks ahead after the fight.

Also on the televised card is featherweight Deividas Taurosevicius, a Copiague resident who heads up Taurus MMA out of Extreme Fitness in Farmingdale. Taurosevicius (11-3) fights undefeated Mackens Semerzier (7-0).

The rest of the card is pretty impressive and features two more of the WEC's biggest names:

Urijah Faber vs. Raphael Assuncao
Mike Brown vs. Anthony Morrison
Dave Jansen vs. Kamal Shalorus
Charlie Valencia vs. Akitoshi Tamura
Wagnney Fabiano vs. Clint Godfrey
Mark Hominick vs. Bryan Caraway
Eddie Wineland vs. George Roop
Coty Wheeler vs. Will Campuzano
