Nominations being accepted for Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame's 2016 class

The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame has begun accepting nominations for potential 2016 inductees, according to executive director Ed Morris.

The class of 2015 included Gary Lee Brown of Brentwood, an offensive lineman for the Super Bowl XXXI champion Packers; Rob Pannell of Smithtown, an all-star for the New York Lizards in Major League Lacrosse who starred at Smithtown West and Cornell; Islip's Carol Rose, who at Northport has become the winningest girls lacrosse coach in state history; Rob Grable of Oakdale, a baseball standout at Connetquot High and St. John's University who went on to play professional baseball; John Gregorek of Northport, a two-time Olympian in track and field who was an All-American at St. Anthony's and Georgetown; Harold Cooley of East Islip, who has guided East Islip's girls bowling team to state and Suffolk championships; Ken Friedheim, a Florida resident formerly of South Setauket who coached the Sachem boys gymnastics teams for 37 years; Richard Mercurio of Miller Place, the former boys lacrosse coach at Sachem, who led the Flaming Arrows to 316 wins; Walter Williams of Babylon, the Babylon director of athletics from 1939-60; the Central Islip Fire Dept. Hoboes drill team, and Newsday sports reporter Bob Herzog.

Nominations for 2016 can be made until Sept. 15 at suffolksportshof.com or by calling 631-758-7463, Morris said.
