For the first time ever, the Olympic Games will be held in South America as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil plays host to the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The event officially begins with the opening ceremony on Aug. 5 -- though the soccer tournament starts a day earlier -- at Maracana Stadium and ends with the closing ceremony on Aug. 21.

Athletes will compete in 42 sports, including golf and rugby, which return to the Olympics for the first time in more than 90 years.

The Olympics will be played in 32 different venues across four regions of Rio -- Deodoro, Maracana, Barra and Copacabana.

More than 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are expected to compete. Of the 306 medal events scheduled, 161 are for men’s events, 136 in women’s events and 9 mixed events.
