NBA's Ben Gordon joins Mt. Vernon Hall of Fame

NBA star Ben Gordon will join the Mount Vernon Sports Hall of Fame Saturday after getting a hero's welcome as he returned to his former school Friday.

The Detroit Pistons star, who attended Longfellow Elementary in Mount Vernon, looked on Saturday as about 75 third- to eighth-graders ran drills at the first-ever "Slam Dunk Clinic," the kick-off for Gordon's Slam Dunk for Education taking place Saturday.

The Mount Vernon High Scvhool gym reverberated with the sound of squeaking sneakers and bouncing basketballs as young athletes moved through drill after drill.

Also on Saturday, Gordon will be taking part in a staff basketball game before the induction ceremony later in the day.

On Friday, Gordon met with students and school officials in hopes of inspiring students to do great things. There also was an awards ceremony Friday night to recognize students with perfect attendance records.
