Player profile: Chad Qualls

Sometimes, there are some things I can't understand. Why didn't Beyonce get with me? Why do real rap lyricists get no airplay (see Papoose)? Why is Chad Qualls getting no respect in mock drafts? Is it because of the dislocated left kneecap he suffered in August that cut his season short? He is already throwing and is expected to be ready for Opening Day.

I owned Qualls in many leagues last season and will target him again. He currenlty has an average draft position of 207 on and I will take him there and even earlier. I don't see why he can't be a top-15 closer or better. He will undervalued and if you wait on closers, this is someone to target.

He appeared in 51 games last season and converted 24 of 29 saves. He had a 3.63 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. In 52 innings, he allowed 53 hits, walked seven and struck out 45. He allowed five home runs.

He had a 7.79 K/9, a 1.21 BB/9 and a great 6.43 K/BB rate. He has always induced grounders at a high rate and was at 57 percent last season. He allowed a fly ball rate of just 23 percent, which is what you want in Arizona.

What more could you ask for? A closer who has excellent control, gets grounders and won't allow many home runs. Last season was the first time had a full-time job as a closer and he showed he could handle the job. Qualls will be one of the best bargains at closer.
