Take a guess what the final ERA of Tigers righthander Max Scherzer was last season? If you remember, his ERA was 7.29 before being sent to the minor leagues in May. To illustrate how good he was the rest of the season, the final ERA was 3.50.
The time in the minors appeared beneficial. In his first start back from the minors on May 30, he walked four in 5 2/3 scoreless innings, continuing his poor control but allowed just two hits and struck out 14.
He allowed nine home runs in first eight starts and 11 in the final 23. Give Scherzer for focusing on turning his season around. Some players don’t handle a demotion well and he was phenomenal upon his return.
After the All-Star break, Scherzer had a 96/35 K/BB ratio in 102 innings with a 2.47 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He has the skills to perform well again and he's not a big name.
He currently has an ADP of 37 among starting pitchers on mockdraftcentral.com. That's a steal.
