In a fight to the finish, the United States got its revenge over Ghana by winning its World Cup opener, 2-1, on Monday at Estadio das Duans in Natal, Brazil.

The United States got out to an early lead as Clint Dempsey scored just 32 seconds into the game for the fastest goal in World Cup history for the U.S.

But despite superb play in net from Tim Howard, the U.S. couldn’t hold off Ghana. Andre Ayew finally scored for Ghana in the 82nd minute to tie the game at 1-1.

That didn’t last long. Reserve player John Brooks, in his World Cup debut, scored on a header just four minutes later for the game-winning goal.

Ghana had eliminated the U.S. in each of the past two World Cup tournaments.
