Devils hire MacLean as coach

John MacLean was named the coach of the Devils yesterday, replacing the retired Jacques Lemaire. MacLean was considered for the head coaching position on three other occasions, but lost out to, in order, Claude Julien (2006), Brent Sutter (2007) and Lemaire (2009).

Flyers' Briere, son escape injury

Flyers center Danny Briere and his 9-year-old son escaped serious injury in an accident with a tractor-trailer near the New York-Pennsylvania state line early Thursday morning, authorities said. Briere and his son, Cameron, were taken to a Binghamton hospital, treated for minor injuries, and released . . . The St. Louis Blues have acquired Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halak for two prospects . . . The Rangers will open training camp on Sept. 17 and play six preseason games.NBA

Dalembert dealt to Kings

Sacramento has acquired center Samuel Dalembert from Philadelphia for forward Andres Nocioni and center Spencer Hawes. The 6-11 Dalembert was Philadelphia's longest-tenured player, but he never developed into a dominant force after being drafted in the first round out of Seton Hall in 2001. - AP
