Steve Matthews’ Belmont selections for Sunday, July 9

Best bet: MAMBO AT THE GYM (6)

Best value: EMERALD QUALITY (4)

FIRST: Straightaway May wheels back in a hurry after nine-length maiden score June 30; more to come. Lifelong Dreamer is speedy and is riding a two-race winning streak; very dangerous. Shadow Surprise also exits front-running victory in last; right in the thick of this.

SECOND: Magnanimus Man fired swift, half-mile work for switch to grass; controlling speed. Infield Is In made mild rally in dirt debut and could be aided by move to turf. Survey owns grass breeding on both sides of pedigree; follow the money.

THIRD: This Bird Can Sing has finished second in five of six starts; finally breaks through today? Sand City drops and returns to dirt; dangerous. Tapceptional was a strong second in debut; right in the thick of this.

FOURTH: Emerald Quality gets class relief and favorable cutback to sprint for white-hot Jeremiah Englehart stable; call based on price potential. Jeanne’s Speight makes first start since claimed by Linda Rice; must be considered. Conquest Lucknlove is rested and owns fast figures; logical, short-priced player.

FIFTH: Rubilinda visually and numerically impressed when winning debut; more to come. Cherry Lodge is firing bullets for move to grass; very interesting. First Charmer owns two wins on Belmont grass; worth long look.

SIXTH: Mambo At the Gym cuts back to more appropriate distance and should pack intensified late wallop; rates call in wide-open field. Marshall Eddy owns fast late-pace figures on best efforts; worth long look at long price. Black Tide exits three, wire-to-wire wins; big-time, front-end threat once again.

SEVENTH: Vertical Oak was declared a non-starter after hitting gate in last; too fast for these on “A” game. Too Much Tip was an even fourth behind top selection in stateside debut May 19; could easily close the gap. American Gal has delivered strong efforts in all four starts; very dangerous.

EIGHTH: Feeling Bossy tallied endurance-building 7-furlong work since logging third straight win last time; more to give. Achnaha was pace and position compromised when third as the favorite behind top selection; dangerous. Desiree Clary owns a win and a third in two starts on Belmont grass; don’t ignore.

NINTH: Matinee Babe was an improved third in last and should have more in the tank in second start since six-month absence. Daddyisdooley bested top selection by more than two lengths when a game second June 14; very playable. Special Risk moves to grass after finishing second in six of 10 dirt starts; underlay material. Sly Ranger should pack amplified late kick with cutback to 6 furlongs; don’t dismiss.
