Steve Matthews’ Belmont selections for Thursday, Oct. 20

Best bet: LADY COVENTRY (1)

Best value: ANTEBELLUM (4)

FIRST: Lady Coventry wheels back in a hurry after speed and fade versus tougher last week; forward move predicted. Barrier to Entry regressed in last after fast-figured win in prior; rebound potential. Reckless Humor moves to turf for Rudy Rod riguez; must consider.

SECOND: Saratoga Sight drops after failing to fire on wet surface last time; bounce-back effort today. Mark Twain could impact if pace meltdown ensues. Luckybuck Syndrome returns to preferred footing and looms a front-end threat on “A” game.

THIRD: Close the Gap gets favorable cutback in distance after displaying newfound speed in last; career best predicted. Daisy Cutter is fresh and packs potent late kick on best efforts; very dangerous. Quinta Verde has delivered strong efforts in both stateside starts; right in the thick of this.

FOURTH: Antebellum owns fast late-pace figures on best efforts and gets rider upgrade today. Hawk Alley is speedy and could play out as the dominant front-runner; big-time danger. La Boot On should be aided by today’s additional furlong; price will be tempting.

FIFTH: Lookin Up was a clear-cut second in first start on Belmont sod; more to come. River Echo makes first start with a maiden-claiming tag; very interesting. Rediscover owns speed, starts from the hedge and makes first start for Rudy Rod riguez; very dangerous.

SIXTH: One Penny Piece is riding a forward line on late-pace and final figures; call based on price potential. Detail owns two wins and a second in last four starts; logical, short-priced threat. Debbie’s Tude is fleet-footed and could prove very tough on a soft lead; must consider.

SEVENTH: Familyofroses gets confident price boost after hard-charging victory in last; pairs up. First Service is rested and consistently delivers strong efforts; very dangerous. Splendid Gold drops, owns fast figs and is 1-for-1 at Belmont; could easily take this.

EIGHTH: Excilly fired half-mile bullet and gets class relief for third stateside start; breakthrough predicted. My Cara Mia has finished second in last two outings; continues trend? Dickinson was a confident winner in lone grass start; very playable.

NINTH: Margarita Sunrise set hot pace and hit the wall in debut and now makes first start for Rodriguez barn; tighter today. Discreet Encounter is improving with each start; developing and dangerous. Kracken Glacken owns two seconds and two thirds in five starts; must consider. Save the Tigers was a tough-trip fifth in well-bet debut; improvement expected.
