Steve Matthews’ Saratoga selections for Thursday, Aug. 31

Best bet: JULES N ROME (4)

Best value: RAPPEL (6)

FIRST: Hardrock Eleven is speedy and should make every fence a winning one; hop to it. No Wunder rallied for second last time dangerous. Selection Sunday failed as the favorite in last; logical, short-priced player once again.

SECOND: One More Round displayed new dimension when a hard-charging third in last; more to come. Forge is speedy and drops; paltry price is the problem. Irst was second in last and now makes first start since claimed by Linda Rice; big-time player.

THIRD: Control Group is speedy, starts from the fence and is riding a two-race winning streak; price won’t get pulse racing, however. Taoiseach took backward step in last after pairing up fast-figured placings in prior two; rebound threat. Crafty Concorde should be aided by return to dirt; worth long look at long ticket.

FOURTH: Jules N Rome displayed improved speed in most recent and fired 3-furlong bullet last week; set for best. Shimmering Moon exits dominant score in last for suddenly live Michelle Nevin barn; very dangerous. Silly Sister logged career-best number at today’s 6 1⁄2-furlong distance; must consider.

FIFTH: Ultimateenticement was a fast-numbered second in first local start; call in race jammed with newcomers. Candy Zip compiled sneaky-good work slate for debut; could be the goods. Stoney Bennett notched a bullet-riddled work tab for first start; follow the money.

SIXTH: Rappel earned improved late-pace figure in last after making middle move and flattening in prior; primed for breakthrough. Grand Sky made sustained rally when a clear-cut winner in last; very dangerous. Rate for Me is riding a two-race winning streak and could offer generous price; very playable. Royal Asset could play out as the controlling speed in contentious field; right in the thick of this.

SEVENTH: Charge Latouche compiled eye-catching training tab for first start off 84-day absence; sitting on ready. Appealing Briefs has finished second at short odds in last two starts; continues trend? Catch a Cab is training with a purpose for first start since gelded; must consider.

EIGHTH: Manifest Destiny is fleet-footed and projects as the main speed in field light on front-runners. Ode to the Hunt tallied swift final fraction when a tough-trip fourth in last; more to give in second start since six-month layoff. Storm Prophet is a repeated failure at short prices; you’ve been warned.

NINTH: Sassy Sienna was a surging winner when bet down to 60 cents on the dollar in debut at Indiana Grand; ready for prime time. Orbolution tallied solid late-pace figure when breaking maiden on Spa sod last time; big-time threat. Romantic Babe was dead on the board but live on the racetrack when winning first start at 38-1; don’t dismiss.

10TH: The Orphan Miracle should possess intensified late wallop with cutback to 7 furlongs; throw deep in wide-open nightcap. Saratoga Charlie gets class relief and logged only win at 7-furlong distance; price will be tempting. Delta Outlaw owns fast figures but has been sidelined for more than a year; mixed message. Bunyaan was a clear-cut second in last and owns swifter back numbers; very dangerous.
