Goerges could be a sleeper in the Open. She has steadily improved herself, won a big WTA event in Stuttgart this year and made it to the third round of the previous three Slams. Like any German female player, she has grown up surrounded by the aura of Steffi Graf and the expectations that go with Graf’s 22 Grand Slam championships.

“Honestly, we can’t bear comparisons with Steffi anymore,” said Goerges at Wimbledon this year. “We will never achieve what she has achieved.”

There is something else besides great expectations she would like to shed. The European media have nicknamed her “Gorgeous Goerges,” a name she detests. She would instead like the beauty of her big, powerful game to come through.
