Joe Frazier wins title at Garden

Smokin' Joe Frazier won by TKO over Jimmy Ellis at the Garden to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Frazier had been recognized by the New York State Athletic Commission as the champion after beating Buster Mathis in a bout for the title that had been left vacant when Muhammad Ali was stripped of it, but Ellis was named title-holder by the WBA after winning an elimination tournament that Frazier hadn't participated in. The undefeated Frazier knocked down Ellis twice in the fourth round, and the fight was stopped before the start of the fifth. Frazier improved to 25-0.
