THIS DAY IN NY SPORTS HISTORY
Tuesday, April 5, 1983
In his first appearance with the Mets since his infamous trade in 1977, Tom Seaver combined with Doug Sisk to shut down the Phillies at Shea Stadium, 2-0. In Seaver's 14th Opening Day start, he allowed three hits, walked none and struck out five in six innings, outpitching Steve Carlton in a battle of future Hall of Famers. Sisk got the win, pitching three innings of relief. Seaver, 38, finished that season 9-14 with a 3.55 ERA.
