UMass upsets Hofstra in CAA opener

Anthony Biscardi scored twice during a five-goal spurt over the second and third quarters as No. 19 Masschusetts topped No. 6 Hofstra, 11-9, in a CAA men's lacrosse game Saturdayin Amherst.

Kevin Ford had three goals, and Brad Lozeaux and Stephen Bentz added two scores each for the Pride (4-2, 0-1 CAA), whose winning streak was halted at four games.

Art Kell led Massachusetts (6-2, 1-0) with three goals.

Bentz scored off a feed from Adrian Sorichetti with 2:18 left in the first to tie the score at 2.

But the Minutemen exploded for four goals in the second quarter and a fifth 1:05 into the third for a 7-2 lead.

Hofstra, which trailed 10-4 late in the third quarter, got as close as 11-9 with 3:12 left in the fourth on goals by Ford and Jamie Lincoln.

But Massachusetts goalkeeper Tim McCormack made six of his 12 saves in the fourth quarter, halting the Pride's rally.
