Kelly Shon of Port Washington posted the best finish of her rookie season on the LPGA Tour when she tied for third at the ShopRite LPGA Classic Sunday.
Shon shot a 1-under-par 70 in the final round at the Stockton Seaview course in Galloway, New Jersey. Her 208 total, which tied her with Morgan Pressel, was three shots back of winner Anna Nordqvist, who shot a final round 69. It was Shon's best finish since a tie for 11th at the Pure Silk-Bahamas Classic at the start of the season. She had missed the cut in five of nine events coming into the ShopRite.
The Princeton graduate was within a stroke of the lead until making a double bogey at the par 3 15th and a bogey at the 16th. A birdie four at the closing par 5 lifted her into third.
"My main goal coming into the round -- it would have been nice to win -- but it was to fight hard, and I did do that," Shon said. "I just had a hiccup there on 15, 16. So minus those two holes, I think I played pretty good."
Her best finish was also her best learning experience.
"I was really proud of the way I handled myself out there," Shon said. "Playing with Anna, the champion, and then Morgan, just watching these guys play and how they handle themselves in the final [threesome], I learned a lot today . . . On the first hole, I don't think my hands have ever shaken that much. So I got that out of the way and hopefully I can get better.
