District manager of Community Board 4 Jose Rodriguez says there are countless issues with the stairs, including cracks, missing concrete and a lack of lighting at night. The Department of Design and Construction is spending more than $2 million to spruce up the steep stairway.

New benches, handrails, steps and lights will be added to the street. The community board says construction will start some time next summer and is expected to last 15 months.
