Avalanche warning issued for Adirondacks

State environmental officials say heavy snowfall has increased the risk of avalanches on Adirondack Mountain slopes, especially in the High Peaks region.

The Department of Environmental Conservation has advised hikers, skiers and snowshoers in the Adirondack back country to take safety precautions, including never traveling alone. They also recommend telling someone where you're going and when you'll return, knowing rescue techniques and carrying safety equipment.

The danger of an avalanche increases during and immediately after major snowfalls, as well as during thaws.

Information on trail conditions and closures can be found on the DEC website.
