Looking for some fun in the city this weekend? I found some freebies for you, so keep your money in your wallet and get partying.
The great outdoors
Learn how to make guacamole, take a stab at rock climbing, ride a bike or just stand in the middle of street. You won't even have to dodge traffic because Summer Streets will be closing Park Avenue and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park to motor vehicles and opening it up to people again this Saturday. Here's how it works: Planned activity stations are based a five "rest stops" in the area. Each stop will have free bike valet parking and a water station, plus a sound stage, where performances and classes (tai chi, yoga, etc.) will be held.
The Uptown Rest Stop, at Park Avenue and 51st Street, will feature free bicycle and inline-skate rentals and guacamole-making demonstrations.
The Midtown Rest Stop, at Park Avenue and 25th Street, will have bike helmet giveaways, an interactive truck safety demonstration, a Whole Foods-sponsored family picnic area at 24th Street, free bike valet parking and a water station.
The Astor Place Rest Stop, at Lafayette Avenue, will feature a health and fitness zone, and juice and snack bars.
The SoHo Rest Stop, at Spring Street and Lafayette Avenue, will have a rock-climbing wall.
The Foley Square Rest Stop, at Duane and Centre streets, will feature sand boxes and live sand sculpting and workshops, as well bicycle-riding lessons and a self-portrait booth.
Art and drinks
Who doesn't love free booze? I don't even drink much, but how can one turn down free? And those imbibing will get to attend a free art gallery exhibit, too, or should it be the other way around? No matter, the point is -- tonight only -- the Ace Hotel, 20 W. 29 St., will be hosting a photography, poster art and installation art exhibit, accompanied by cocktails. Festivities get under way at 8 p.m. Call 212-679-2222 for details.
Kids eat free in August at IHOP, so pack up those rug rats and head to the nearest pancake house any day of the month from 4 to 10 p.m. You'll score one free kids meal with each adult entree purchased. Freebie is for kids 12 and younger only.
After your pancake dinner, head to Hudson River Park Pier 46 at Charles Street and West Street for a free movie under the stars sponsored by RiverFlicks. Tonight's feature, "Shrek Forever After," will begin at dusk -- figure about 8:30 p.m. And if that isn't enough, they'll be giving away free popcorn, too.
