Knowing trivia helps in Hamptons Pursuit Road Rallye

Richard Demato, former Board of Directors president for the Retreat, and wife Harriet showed off their classic car at the 2009 Hamptons Pursuit Car Rallye.

A partner and a cool car are all you need to turn the Hamptons’ back roads into your own trivia game this weekend. The third annual Hamptons Pursuit Road Rallye will send players (most in vintage or otherwise stylish cars) on a scavenger hunt from Bridgehampton to North Haven.

The third annual Hamptons Pursuit Road Rallye is a makeshift scavenger hunt along a route that runs from Bridgehampton to North Haven

What to expect

The event, geared to classic car owners, begins in front of The Retreat Boutique, a nonprofit domestic violence agency in Bridgehampton. The two-person teams are given a map of the course and clues that send them on a driving quest through the Hamptons in pursuit of the next checkpoint.

Once there, volunteers stamp game cards and lob trivia questions at players before they continue along the course. Each correct answer gets the team closer to winning prizes at the finish line.

But don't think it's a race, at least not in the traditional sense.

"The game is not timed," says Xavier Maignan, a trustee of the American Concours Foundation, which sponsors the annual event. It typically takes around 2.5 hours to complete the course.

At the finish line

Although there is a prize for the team that finishes the route first, the main goal of the rallye is the get the most questions correct, so participants are encouraged to travel the route at a comfortable (and legal) pace.

"We use the high school Trivial Pursuit game, but we [players] still miss half the questions," says Richard Demato, 59, of Sag Harbor, who has participated in past rallye tours.

Among this year's prizes: driving experiences in a Mercedes and a Ferrari. Donated items, including artwork from local galleries and car detailing services, will be auctioned during the event.

Rallye for a cause

As if the sport isn't enough to get you into the game, players are helping victims of domestic violence, since all rallye and silent auction proceeds benefit The Retreat.

Demato says, "It's a wonderful cause, and it's a lot of fun, like playing Trivial Pursuit live."
